The South Mainland is rich in the remains of the past, offering internationally important archaeological sites such as Mousa Broch, Jarlshof and Old Scatness. More recent history is in evidence at the Shetland Croft House Museum, Quendale Mill and Betty Mouat’s Cottage, all within a 15 minute drive of Nort Neuk and nearer home, the Leebitten Boat Shed and the Hoswick Visitor Centre.
All through the South Mainland you will find fascinating traces of the past such as miniature watermills, old stone built croft townships with patterns of ancient field systems and traditional Shetland boats, with their sleek lines of Viking origin, pulled up in ‘noosts’.
